RESOLUTION No. 1~0 90
WHEREAS, diseases of the heart and blood vessels this year will
kill almost one million Americans, which equals the number of deaths
from all other causes combined; and
WHEREAS, such diseases are the number one killers in Hawaii,
claiming the lives of more than 8,000 people during 1988; and
WHEREAS, an estimated 180,000 Americans die of cardiovascular
diseases before reaching retirement age; and
WHEREAS, high cholesterol is one of the controllable risk
factors for heart disease and 58 percent of adults have high risk
cholesterol levels; and
WHEREAS, cardiovascular diseases will cost our country over $88
billion this year; and
WHEREAS, the American Heart Association is the only voluntary
health agency whose sole mission is to prevent premature death and
disability from cardiovascular diseases, including heart attack and
stroke; and
WHEREAS, the American Heart Association is dedicated to funding
a statewide and nationwide research program, as well as improving
healthcare in the community through professional and public
education, and community service programs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it requests and urges all people to support the American
Heart Association's lifesaving mission of fighting heart disease and
stroke and to demonstrate that support by contributing generously to
the annual fundraising efforts of hundreds of community volunteers
during February 1990, American Heart Month.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all people on the Big Island give
special attention to cholesterol during American Heart Month by
having their cholesterol levels checked.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this resolution to the American Heart Association
members Mr. Walter Kimura, Chairman of the Board of Directors, West
Hawaii Division; Ms. Laurie Smith, Chairman of the Board of
Directors, East Hawaii Division; Ms. Eleanor Ruddle, Director of
West Hawaii Division; and Ms. Barbara Kozuma, Director of East
Hawaii Division.

Pursuant to Section 1(d) of Rule 4 of the Rules of Procedure of
the Council of the County of Hawaii, this written approval is
submitted in regards to Resolution No. , relating to the
American Heart Association, waiving said referral from the
Committee on Human Services and Recreation, in order that
appropriate action can be taken by the Council.
In reviewing the contents of the referral, it is deemed
advisable that such waiver be granted.
