Re: Resolution No. 144-90/p[~~C-77 COUNTY OF HA1Ml =.S,:S~ATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION No. 144 90 WHEREAS, the Environmental Protection Agency is pursuing a goal to reduce the amount of the waste stream in t_he United States by twenty-five percent by 1992; and WHEREAS, the United States generates about one hundred sixty million tons of municipal solid waste annually, which is approximately three and a half pounds a person per day; and WHEREAS, an average office employee discards one and a half pounds of recyclable paper per day; and WHEREAS, government offices have the reputation of disposing a larger amount of recyclable paper than average offices; and WHEREAS, the Environmental Protection Agency has shown that recycling paper reduces the amount of office trash by thirty-four percent; and WHEREAS, due to the lack of recycling, the Hawaii County landfills are reaching their capacity at a much faster rate, thereby considerably decreasing their life expectancy. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it supports the efforts of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and recommends that this County establish its own recycling program for office paper and investigate the feasibility of purchasing recycled paper. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit copies of this resolution to Mayor Bernard Akana, all County Department Heads, and Sonja Okano, Litter Control Specialist for the State of Hawaii. The Resolution also recommends that the County look into developing its own recycling program within the County offices €or office paper and to investigate the feasibility of purchasing recycled paper.
