HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 168 Draft 01 1988-1992COUNTY OF HAVif,/~,~~ ,,.=S.TATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION No. 16~ 30 WHEREAS, Earth Day was founded by former U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson and was first celebrated on April 22, 1970 as a means of bringing environmental issues to the political forefront; and WHEREAS, this year marks the 20th anniversary since the first Earth Day celebration, and we still face numerous environmental problems which need to be addressed such as solid waste disposal, hazardous waste disposal, water quality, acid rain, global warming, and stratosphere ozone depletion; and WHEREAS, it is important that we all take responsibility for and actively contribute to protecting and enhancing the environment in which we live in order to ensure a quality environment for future generations; and WHEREAS, organizations in the State such as the Sierra Club, Greenpeace Hawaii, Nature Conservancy of Hawaii, and Conservation Council for Hawaii, continue to persevere to raise the level of public awareness and action in the area of environmental protection; Whereas, the Earth Day 1990 celebration in Hawaii County will include activities such as tree planting ceremonies, beach and ocean clean-ups, traditional Hawaiian conservation games and programs, a march for parks, an environmental poster contest for elementary school children, ar. environmental fair, an environmental education workshop, and a cultural festival. NOW, THEREFORE, BE TT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it recognizes and designates April 22, 1990 as "Earth Day" in the County of Hawaii and pledges its commitment to working for the betterment of our environment. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is directed to transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable John D. Waihee, Governor, State of Hawaii; the Honorable Bernard K. Akana, Mayor, County of Hawaii; Hugo Huntzinger, Superintendent, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park; Jerry Shimoda, Superintendent, Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park; Sierra Club; Greenpeace Hawaii; The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii; Conservation Council for Hawaii; and Hawaii Earth Day 1990. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii, this 4th day of April 1990. Your Committee understands that the Earth Day celebration in Hawaii County includes activities that will benefit the public, such as beach and ocean clean-ups, tree planting, and various environmental public education efforts. Your Committee finds that on the 20th anniversary of Earth Day we still face environmental problems.
