HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 185 Draft 01 1988-19921 ~~I COUNTY OF HA1Mq~, :>~':=S'I•ATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION No. 185 90 WHEREAS, in 1965, Hawaii was one of twenty-one states that received a grant from the Office of Economic Opportunity to begin the Foster Grandparent Program; and WHEREAS, the program is funded partly by ACTION, the federal umbrella agency for volunteer programs, and the State to benefit both the old and the young; and WHEREAS, on the island of Hawaii the Foster Grandparent Program began in 1975 with eight foster grandparents and has expanded to 26 foster grandparents who serve four hours daily, five days a week for a total of approximately 20,000 hours annually in schools, day care and day treatment centers, and other agencies islandwide; and WHEREAS, foster grandparents are low income older Americans who share a wealth of experience, knowledge, and love with children with special or exceptional needs who thrive on that love and attention; and WHF,REAS, foster grandparents serve children who have special needs arising from mental retardation, physical disability, sight or hearing impairment, specific learning disabilities, emotional problems, abuse or neglect, or other problems; and WHEREAS the foster grandparents have patience, perseverance, devotion and energy that are characteristic of the "young at heart" while they teach children activities of daily living, basic academic skills, gross and fine motor skills, socialization and other appropriate behavior skills. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it hereby honors and commends the Foster Grandparent Program on its twenty-fifth anniversary for the dedicated contributions, work efforts and devotion of senior citizens who help Hawaii's special children and extends best wishes for continued success. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is directed to transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable George H. W. Rush, President of the United States; the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, United States Senator; the Honorable Daniel K. Akaka, United States Representative; the Honorable Patricia Saiki, United States Representative; the Honorable John Waihee, Governor of the State of Hawaii; the Honorable Andrew Levin, Senator; the Honorable Richard Matsuura, Senator; the Honorable Malama Solomon, Senator; the Honorable Jerry Chang, Representative; the Honorable Wayne Metcalf III, Representative; the Honorable Harvey Tajiri, Representative; the Honorable Dwight Takamine, Representative; the Honorable Virginia Isbell, Representative; the Honorable Mike O'Kieffe, Representative; the Honorable Larry Tanimoto, Mayor of the County of Hawaii; Mr. Michael L.
