WHEREAS, Honolulu International Airport is the heaviest used
airport facility and Hilo International Airport is the least used
airport facility in the State of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, Honolulu International Airport is the only airport
facility which accommodates immigration and customs inspections on
regularly scheduled airline flights from foreign departure points;
and
WHEREAS, foreign arrival passengers subjec to immigration and
customs inspections at Honolulu International Airport are faced with
lengthy processing and congestion due to the volume of foreign
passenger arrivals; and
WHEREAS, foreign travelers arriving on American soil should have
a memorable experience rather than one of inconvenience and
discomfort after a long and tiring flight; and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the State of Hawaii that
every effort be made to make the arrival of each visitor to the
islands as comfortable as possible.
NOW, THEREFORE, BF. IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCII, OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it supports an effort to establish Hilo International
Airport as an immigration and customs point of entry facility to
ease discomfort and inconveniences to our foreign visitors and
encourages the Federal, State and County governments to work
together to establish a full-time immigration and customs facility
at Hilo International Airport.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this resolution to the Hawaii Congressional
delegation; the Honorable John waihee, Governor of the State of_
Hawaii; the Honorable Richard S.H. Wong, President of the Senate;
the Honorable Daniel Kihano, Speaker of the House of
Representatives; Big Island legislators; Mr. Edward Hirata,
Director, State Department of Transportation and the Honorable Goro
Hokama, President, Hawaii State Association of Counties.
