RESOLUTION Na. 198 90
WHEREAc, the Hawaii County Young Men's Christian
Association - Waiakea Settlement has been an integral part of the
County of Hawaii for over seventy-five years; and
WHEREAS, tYie Hawaii County Young Men's Christian
Association - Waiakea Settlement throughout the years has provided
quality programs, ranging from education to recreation, for our
c:.ildren, youth, and adults alike; and
WHEREAS, the staff and managers of the Hawaii County Young
Men's Christian Association - Waiakea Settlement through their
dedication for the betterment of our community have enhanced the
well-being of our citizens; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Young Men's Christian
Association - Waiakea Settlement in an effort to bring the benefits
of its programs to the larger Hawaii island communitl- has
established a program unit in North Hawaii at Waimea; and
WHEREAS, in conjunction ++ith this out-reach drive a
diligent group of citizens in Waimea have, over the past two years
worked to make the Y.M.C.A. presence a reality in their community by
offering programs to the families of North Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, es'_ablishment of a facility in Waimea is a
pre-requisite to a fully operational Y.M.C.A. presence with
attendant programs for the youth and families of North Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the high cost of land prohibits acquisition of the
lands needed for expansion of the Waiakea Settlement facility in
Hilo, and for establishing a tvu~th Hawaii facility in Waimea; and
WHEREAS, the Boards of Directors of both the Y.M.C.A. in
Hilo and in Waimea have initiated discussions with the Hacvaii
District Land Agent of the Department of Land and Natural Resources
to explore the possibility of obtaining 'c .» parcels of land, one in
Waimea for the purpose of building a new Y.M.C.A. facility in
Waimea, and one in Iii to for the purpose of expandi;i~ the facilities
in Hilo; and
WIiEREAS, in recognition of ttie long -:nd outstanding
contributions of the Hawaii County Young Men's Ch~istizn Association
- Waiakea Settlement, and, of the Hawaii County Council's commitment
to extending the benefits of its services and programs to a greater
number of families and citizens in the County of iiawaii.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it supports the efforts of the Hawaii County Young
Men's Christian Association - Waiakea Settlement in extending its
services to North Hawaii by establishing a facility in Waimea and by
extending the facility in Hilo.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of
Hawaii urges the Department of Land and Natural Resources and its
Board of Directors to give favorable consideration to making lands
available in Waimea for the purpose of building a Y.M.C.A. facility
in Waimea, and in Hilo for the purpose of expanding the facilities
in Hilo.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be
sent to the Director of the Department of Land and Natural
Resources; the Board of Land and Natural Resources; the Hawaii
District Land Agent of the Department of Land and Natural Resources;
the Director of the Hawaii County Young Men's Christian Association
- Waiakea Settlement, and its Board of Directors.

WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Young Men's Christian
