WHEREAS, there are indications that the first small contingents
of Portuguese immigrants from mainland Portugal, Macau, Goa, Timor,
and other communities arrived in Hawaii in 1788 and quickly
established Portuguese settlements here; and
WHEREAS, those Portuguese who arrived in Hawaii then soon chose
to put aside the language and culture of their home country and
assimilated into Hawaiian communities, becoming a solid part of
Hawaii's mainstream population, and it wasn't until the centennial
recognition for those larger groups of Portuguese immigrants who
came to Hawaii later that the Portuguese community in Hawaii
rediscovered their distinct and rich heritage; and
WHEREAS, the contributions to the socio-economic well-being of
Hawaii which stemmed from that core of Portuguese immigrants was
significant, including such accomplished people as Dr. Joao
d'Castro, Secretary and Advisor to King Kamehameha I (1814),
Sergeant Leroy A. Mendonca, youngest soldier to receive the Medal of
Honor (1951); Antonio J. Perry, Chief Justice of the Territorial
Supreme Court (1.926); Bishop Stephen Alencastre (1926); and public
servants, legislators, engineers, entrepreneurs, physicians, lawyers
and judges, artists and clergy; and
WHEREAS, Portuguese in Hawaii will embark on a one-year
bicentenial celebration starting in July 1990, to commemorate the
great discoveries and glorious accomplishments of their ancestors
such as in 1488 when Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape of Good Hope
and entered the Indian Ocean, effecting what is perhaps the greatest
single feat of navigation in history; and into the twentieth century
with Continho and Cabral, the first trans-Atlantic aviators who
completed their flight in 1922, five years before Lindberg's solo
flight; and
WHEREAS, these exploits and discoveries were made possible
through the vision and tenacity of Prince Henry, "The Navigator"
followed by Christopher Columbus and other notable non-Portuguese
navigators who studied the art of navigation from the Portuguese,
making their. navigational feats possible.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it recognizes the contributions that the Portuguese have
made to Hawaii's society and that this Bicentenary celebration
period is the appropriate time to reflect upon and appreciate the
exploits of the intrepid Portuguese navigators who braved uncharted
oceans to discover two-thirds of this planet, as well as those who
migrated to Hawaii over two hundred years ago to an unknown land.
BF. IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawaii
congratulates the citizens of Portuguese ancestry in Hawaii for
their continued enrichment and sharing of their culture and wishes
them success in the celebration of the Bicentenary of the arriva]. of
the Portuguese in Hawaii.
BE ZT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is
instructed to send copies of this resolution to the Honorable
John Henry Felix, Consul of Portugal; the Hawaii Island Portuguese
Chamber of Commerce; the Big Island Portuguese Culture Club; and the
Hawaii Council on Portuguese Heritage.
