WHEREAS, the macadamia nut is considered the world's most
perfect nut; and
WHEREAS, the Island of Hawaii produces, processes, and sells
more macadamia nuts than anywhere else in the world; and
WHEREAS, macadamia nuts have become the third largest crop in
F3awaii and the preeminent diversified agricultural crop; and
WHEREAS, the cultivation, processing, and sales of macadamia
nuts has created new economic activity for the State and the Island
of Hawaii and offers employment to many island residents; and
WHEREAS, cultivation of macadamia nuts creates beautiful
orchards which enhance the Hawaiian environment and adds to the
natural beauty of our island state for the benefit of residents and
visitors alike; and
WHEREAS, 98~ of the total macadamia nut production in the State
of Hawaii comes from Hawaii County; and
WHEREAS, C. Brewer and Company, LTD.'s Chairman of the Board and
President, J.W.A. "Doc" Buyers, through its subsidiary company,
Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation, is spearheading the
establishment of the Hilo Macadamia taut Festival, scheduled for
Auqust 31, 1990 through September 1, 1990; and
WHEREAS, the Hilo Macadamia Nut Festival will focus attention on
our County's leadership position in the world for the macadamia nut
industry.

NOW, THEKEFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that in recognition of the importance of the macadamia nut
industry to the County of Hawaii and the establishment of the Hilo
Macadamia Nut Festival, it designates the week of August 26, 1990
through September 1, 1990 as Macadamia Nut Week on the Island of
Hawaii.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council encourages residents and
visitors to celebrate the Island of Hawaii's leadership in the
macadamia nut industry by participating in the activities of the
Hilo Macadamia Nut Festival on August 31, 1990 through September 1,
1990.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is
hereby instructed to send a true copy of this resolution to
J.W.A. "Doc" Buyers, Chairman of the Board and President of
C. Brewer Company, LTD.
