HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 245 Draft 01 1988-1992COUNTY OF HAW:q,~t,~Y ~,•,5.'IrATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION No. 2A~ so WHEREAS, the Kona Coffee industry is currently experiencing marketing problems resulting in excessive coffee inventory, price reduction and restrictive purchases by a major buyer; and WHEREAS, Kona Coffee's superior quality recognition may be in jeopardy unless some protective measures are enacted in regards to minimum contents of any coffee blend labeled Kona blend; and WHEREAS, the Kona Coffee Council has endorsed a position that any coffee being sold as a Kona blend should consist of no less than 518 Kona Coffee; and WHEREAS, the Kona Farm Bureau has also recommended that truth in labelling legislation be enacted to insure that full disclosure be made of the actual portions of the contents of any Kona blend coffee; and WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Council concurs with the industry's assessment that minimum standards need to be established for blends of Kona Coffee and that labelling must accurately reflect the contents of any blend. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it urges the State Department of Agriculture to initiate rules and regulations which will require that the amount of Kona Coffee in any Kona blend coffee be a minimum of 518 of the contents and further that the package of any Kona blend coffee be required to accurately reflect the percentage of its coffee contents. BE. IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be directed to transmit copies of this resolution to Mr. Yukio Kitagawa, Chairman of the Board of Agriculture, State of Hawaii; Mr. William Cowell, President of the Kona Coffee Council; and Ms. Lynn Maunakea, Director of Research and Development, County of Hawaii.
