RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Hawaiian culture is perpetuated through the teaching
and performances of hula, Hawaiian music, chants and folklore; and
WHEREAS, the spirit of aloha and sharing are central to the
Hawaiian culture; and
WHEREAS, George Naope has perpetuated Hawaiian culture through
creating, performing and teaching of hula for over fifty years; and
WHEREAS, George Naope founded the Merrie Monarch Festival, Aloha
ti~Ieek and the International Kupuna Hula Festival; and
WHEREAS, George Naope is a creative artist who has dedicated his
life to sharing the art of hula with the rest of the world; and
WHEREAS, George Dlaope received a 1990 Aloha Week award.
NOW, TEiEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it recognize and commend George Naope for his creative
genius and his generous sharing of the art of hula for over fifty
years.
BE IT FCTRTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit a true copy of this resolution to George Naope.

Your Committee on Human Services and Recreation to which was referred
Resolution No. 253-90, reports as follows:
The purpose of Resolution No. 253-90 is to recognize and commend
George Naope for his creative genius and his generous sharing of the
art of hula for over fifty years.
Your Committee heard testimony in support of Resolution 253-90 from
Mr. Glenn Kondo, who stated that Mr. Naope richly deserves to be
recognized for his steadfast dedication as shown in the following
accomplishments:
1. Perpetuting the Hawaiian culture, language and folklore
through the hula;
2. Increasing the awareness of the general public in the art of
hula by founding the Merrie Monarch Festival; and
3. Transmitting the intangibles which make up the spirit of
aloha.
Your Committee understands that George Naope recently won an Aloha
Week award.
Your Committee finds that the perpetuation of Hawaiian culture
through the performance and teaching of hula, Hawaiian music, chants
and folklore provides a substantial benefit to the public. Your
Committee further finds that George Naope's dedication to sharing the
art of hula with the world is commendable.
Your Committee concurred with the Chairwoman's recommendation to
approve Resolution No. 253-90.
