WHEREAS, Ung Soy "Beans" Afook, a respected teacher, counselor
and the greatest high school basketball coach in the history of
Hawaii, passed away on January 16, 1991 at the age of 89; and
YdHEREAS, Ung Soy Afook coached the Hilo Intermediate School
Spartans from 1930 to 1935 and became a legend when his team won a
phenomenal 24-point victory over the Hilo High School Vikings; and
WHEREAS, Ung Soy "Coach Beans" Afook, won statewide fame while
coaching the Hilo High Vikings from 1935 to 1949, compiling an
incredible record of 192 wins and only 15 losses and winning ten
Territorial championships in 13 years of competition; and
WHEREAS, Ung Soy Afook, while serving the Department of
Education for 40 years, encouraged, inspired and mentored countless
students, some of whom went on to great achievements and fame
playing and coaching basketball; and
Wt3EREAS, in recognition of his legendary achievements, in 1983
the County renamed the former Hilo Civic Auditorium in his and
Richard "Pablo" Chinen's honor; and
WHEREAS, while Ung Soy Afook will be greatly missed, his
contributions to the community will live on through the traditions
he started, the lives he influenced so positively, and the honors
bestowed upon him.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that. it extends its condolences and deepest sympathy to his
wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Afook, and his family.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit a true copy of this resolution to Mrs. Elizabeth Afook.

RE: Ung Soy Afook Condolence Resolution
Pursuant to Section 1(d) of Rule 4 of the Rules of Procedure of
the Council of the County of Hawaii, this written approval is
submitted in regards to Resolution No. 293 , relating to the
Ung Soy Condolence Resolution, waiving said referral from the
Committee on Human Services, in order that appropriate action
can be taken by the Council.
In reviewing the contents of the referral, it is deemed
advisable that such waiver he granted.
