WHEREAS, Richard Kiyoshi "Pablo" Chinen, an outstanding sportsman,
amateur boxer, sports promoter, and war hero, passed away on January 17,
1991 at the age of 71; and
WHEREAS, Richard Kiyoshi Chinen was a champion flyweight boxer and
the former head of the Big Island Amateur Boxing Club; and
WHEREAS, Richard Kiyoshi Chinen contributed greatly to the sport of
baseball as the promotional director for the Hawaii Islanders baseball
team and the founder of the State Colt and Pony League; and
WHEREAS, Richard Kiyoshi Chinen was the County's first manager of
`_he Hilo Civic Auditorium, which the County renamed in his and Ung Soy
"Beans" Afook's honor in 1983; and
WHEREAS, Richard Kiyoshi Chinen served valiantly in the 100th
Infantry Battalion during World War II and received the French Croix de
Guerre, `he United States Army Silver Star, Bronze Star and the Purple
Heart; and
WHEREAS, Richard Kiyoshi Chinen was named Sportsman of the Year by
Sportsmen of Hawaii in 1959; and
WHEREAS, while Richard Kiyoshi Chinen will be greatly missed, his
name and work will live on through his many accomplishments and
contributions.
NOW, THEREFORE BE I'I' RESOLVED BY THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it
extends its condolences and deepest sympathy to his wife, Mrs. Alice M.
Chinen, and his family.
BE IT FUR'PHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit true copies of this resolution to Mrs. Alice M. Chinen, Mr.
Richard K. Chinen Jr., Ms. Cynthia C. Sasaoka, and Miss Andrea K. Chinen.

RL: Richard Chinon Condolence Resolution
Pursuant to Section 1(d) of Rule 4 of the Rules of Procedure of
the Council of the County of Hawaii, this written approval is
submitted in regards to Resolution No. 294 , relating to the
Richard Chinon Condolence Resolution, waiving said referral from
the Committee on Human Services, in order that appropriate action
can be taken by the Council.
In reviewing the contents of the referral, it is deemed advisable
that such waiver be granted.
