RESOLUTION No. 303 ~1
WHEREAS; the Hilo High School Vikings Boys Varsity Basketball
Team achieved an exemplary feat in athletic competition by winning
the State High School Basketball Championship which was held in
Honolulu on March 6-9, 1991; and
WHEREAS; this precedent setting victory was not only the first.
championship won by a Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF)
team in 27 years, but also the first neighbor island team to win
this prestigious title, dating back to 1964 when Hilo also took the
crown; and
WHEREAS; the second seeded Vikings displayed their outstanding
championship skills by winning three exciting games, climaxed by a
59-44 triumph over top-seeded Kalaheo High School in the Finals,
thus ending their memorable season with an unbeaten 21-win and
0-loss record; and
WHEREAS; winning under such tremendous pressures and
adversities, reflects the team effort that was made and signifies
the quality players and coaches being developed on the Big Island of
Hawaii, which deserves recognition and accolades from sporting
enthusiasts as well as the community at large; and
WHEREAS; the 1991 Hilo High School Viking Champions are:
Players - Chad Alameda, Grant Baclig, Tod Bello,
Wilmer Castillo, Keoki De Sa, Seth Gardner,
Steven Idemoto, Theodore Ireland, Clayton
Kaneshiro, Paul Lee, Shon Malani, Herman
Medeiros, Robert Medeiros, Benjamin Pana, Kaulana
Pakele, MokoiFonua Pousima, Solomon Wakita; Head
Coach Larry Manliguis; Assistant Coaches - Roy
Kobayashi, Eddie Kalima, Jr., Wayne Kaneshiro,
Walter Ah Hee, Kelly Lerma, Stan Sanehira; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it proudly congratulates the Hilo High School Vikings
Boys Varsity Basketball Team and Coaches upon their cooperative
efforts in winning the 1991 State High School Boys Varsity
Basketball Championship, and wishes them continued success in future
athletic and academic pursuits:
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is
instructed to transmit true copies of this resolution to Principal
Donna Saiki and to Head Coach Larry Manliguis.
