RESOLUTION No. 304 ~1
WHEREAS, the County welcomes new forms of transit service which
harmoniously supplement existing transportation services to the
general public; and
WHEREAS, the County supports the revitalization of Hilo and the
preservation of cultural and historical attractions for all to
enjoy; and
WHEREAS, the uniquely designed sampan bus was a traditional and
colorful form of public transportation in and around Hilo for many
years until the County Mass Transit Agency started bus service in
the mid 1970's; and
WHEREAS, the Lyman House Memorial Museum has proposed to the
County, the Downtown Improvement Association, the Chambers of
Commerce, the Hawaii Visitors Bureau, two shopping centers and
merchants that privately owned refurbished sampan buses be used for
regular routes and schedules in Hilo town; and
WHEREAS, the Council finds that the reintroduction of the sampan
bus service could enhance the cultural, historical and economic
development activities in Hilo town and heighten the town's appeal
for residents and visitors alike; and
WHEREAS, the Council further finds that the sampan bus service
would most appropriately be provided by the private sector as an
enhancement to the culture and economy of Hilo.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that the County Department of Research and Development is
requested to provide technical assistance to the Lyman House
Memorial Museum in gaining community and business support and
non-County funding to reintroduce sampan bus service to Hilo.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED 'PHAT THE CLERK OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII
transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable Lorraine R.
Inouye, P9ayor; Millie Kim, Director, Department of Research and
Development; and Leon H. Bruno, Museum Director, Lyman House
Memorial Museum.
