WHEREAS, the Hawaii County General Plan designates the property
located in Awake'e, North Kona, identified as TMK: 7-2-04:03, for
Resort, Medium Density Urban, and Open uses; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Land and Natural Resources and the State
Legislature have approved the land exchange between the State of
Hawaii's land located at Maniniowali and Kukio 2nd, identified as
TMK: 7-2-04: Portion of 17, and North Kona Development Group's
existing holding at Awake'e; and
WHEREAS, the lands of Awake'e are rich in natural resources,
including the cindercone landmark or Pu'u Kuili, anchialine ponds,
and 5,800 feet of coastal shoreline; and
WHEREAS, the State has expressed its desire to establish a
Wilderness Heritage Park which would include the coastal shoreline of
Awake'e and Maniniowali; and
WHEREAS, the present General Plan designations for Awake'e are
inappropriate in light of the land exchange and future State use of
the property; and
WHEREAS, Section 6(B)(3) of the Hawaii County General Plan
grants the Council the authority to initiate amendments to the
General Plan by resolution.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that the Planning Department is requested to conduct
a study to determine the feasibility of amending the General
Plan to redesignate the land at Awake'e identified as
TMK: 7-2-04:03 from Resort and Medium Density Urban to Open.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii is directed to transmit certified copies of this
resolution to Mayor Lorraine Inouye, Planning Director Norman
Hayashi, and Planning Commission Chairman Pro Tem Mike Luce.
