Resolutim 3&0 92
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Volcanoes National park (HVNP), wed by an Act of Congress on
August 1,1916, is the leading Big Island visikor destination; and
WHEREAS, HVNP is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year, in conjunction with the 75th
Anniversary of the National Park Service, and wi]1 be dedicated on
August 25, 1991 as a World Heritage Site as selected by the United Nations; and
WHEREAS, HVNP is the site of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, which was established in
1912 and continues to serve the United States Gealogical Survey as its base for reseazch into the
9e~9y and volcanology of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the Pazk has innumera4le scenic and dramatic volcanic features such as active
eruptions, lava tubes, pit craters, caves and two massive calderas, in addition to
of the coastline, Pack Ocean and the flanks of Kilauea and Mauna Loa; and panoramic vistas
WHEREAS, within the Pazk's boundaries aze found varicus climatic zones, ranging from alpine
to O0~`~ ]'ow~~ and from tropical rainforest to aril desert, that provide habitat for a rich
variety of endemic plant and animal com muniti,es; and
WHEREAS, these bdalogically diverse environments allow many significant scientific endeavors
and observations to proceed; and
ago W H~ER~EAS, the azea is rich in archaeological sites that include ancient Hawaiian villages,
PL°ts- temples, petroglyphs, trails, and burial sites; and
WHEREAS, the environs of HVNP, and in particular Kilauea Vo]cano, provide an ideal setting
for native Hawaiians to practice and thus preserve their traditional native culture.
NOW, THEREFORE, BETP RESOLVED BY THE COUNCII. OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that
sincere congratulations are extended to Hawaii Volcanoes National Pazk on its 75th Anniversary
and for its selection as a World Heritage Site by the Urdted Nations.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Coundl extend a wazm mahalo to the National Park
Service for the exceptional level of dedicated service which its employees have provided
throughout the past 75 years.
BE TT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council encourages all residents and visitors to the Big
Island to enjoy the resources of the pazk and support the numerous on-going programs.

copies of this resolution to Mr. Manuel Lujan, Jr., Secretary of the interior;

National Park Service; and Mr. Hugo Huntzinger, Superintendent, Hawaii Volcanoes National pazk.
