RESOLUTION No. :381 91
WHEREAS, Mr. Jon W. Erickson, Public Information Officer
for the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, suddenly passed away on
September 24, 1991, at the age of 42; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Erickson began his career with the National
Park Service in 196E and was transferred to the Hawaii Volcanoes
National Park in 1978; and
WHEREAS, at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Mr. Erickson had
served as Supervisory Park Ranger, Interpretive Specialist,
Special Events Coordinator and worked closely with the Hawaii
Natural History Association; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Erickson, as Public Information Officer,
exhibited an extraordinary ability to quickly assess situations
and provide concise, detailed overviews to the news media and
affected government agencies regarding eruptions and geological
events, other emergency situations, as well as special events
and celebrations; and
WHEREAS, the general public, park employees, and news media
affectionately recognized Mr. Erickson as 'The Voice of the
Volcano' for his excellent coverage of eruptions of Kilauea and
Mauna Loa which led to his expertise being requested by other
National Packs; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Erickson's dedication and commitment to serving
Hawaii Volcanoes National Pack and indeed, the Big Island
community, will be sorely missed.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it extends its sincere condolences and deepest
sympathy to Mrs. Niki Erickson and her children, Michelle,
Kelsey, and Brett.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THE CLERK OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII transmit a true copy of this resolution to
Mrs. Niki Erickson.
