HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 418 Draft 01 1988-1992COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION N0. 418 92 WHEREAS, the National Park Service, Depattmen`_ of the Interior, is proposing higher entry fees for two National Parks on the Island of Hawaii, which are Pu'uhonua o Honaunau and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park; and WHEREAS, Pu'uhonua o Honaunau is included in the proposal to administratively increase the fee rate schedule at National Parks which presently charge less than the maximum rates allowed under the Land and Water Conservation Act; and WHEREAS, the proposed new fee for Pu'uhonua o Honaunau would change the present free entry to a fee of $2 per vehicle and $1 per person; and WHEREAS, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is included in a proposal for legislation to set higher rates with maximum fees of $10 per vehicle and $5 per person at ten additional parks; and WHEREAS, the changes being proposed, if approved, will present a hardship to many people on the Island of Hawaii and will result in pricing the National Parks out of the budgets of many of our local residents; and WHEREAS, the proposed entry fee increases would result in less use of the National Parks in Hawaii County and would deny enjoyment of the scenery, natural and historic objects, and wild life in the two National Parks; and WHEREAS, the Island of Hawaii is geographically isolated and its residents have very few affordable options for visiting wilderness areas. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF 'THE COUNTY OF HAWAII THAT it urges the President of the United States and the U. S. Congress to retain the present free entry to Pu'uhonua o Honaunau and the present entry fees of $5 per vehicle and $2 per person to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED 'PHAT THE CLERK OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable George Walker Bush, President of the United States; the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, U.S. Senator; the Honorable Daniel K. Akaka, U.S. Senator; the Honorable Neil Abercrombie, U.S. Representative; the Honorable Patsy T. Mink, U.S. Representative; Mr. Manuel Lujan, Jr., Secretary of the Interior; Mr. James M. Ridenour, Director, National Park Service; Mr. G. Bryan Harry, Pacific Area Director, National Park Service; Mr. Hugo Huntzinger, Superintendent, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park; and Mr. Jerry Y.
