RESOLUTION N0. 418 92
WHEREAS, the National Park Service, Depattmen`_ of the Interior,
is proposing higher entry fees for two National Parks on the Island
of Hawaii, which are Pu'uhonua o Honaunau and the Hawaii Volcanoes
National Park; and
WHEREAS, Pu'uhonua o Honaunau is included in the proposal to
administratively increase the fee rate schedule at National Parks
which presently charge less than the maximum rates allowed under the
Land and Water Conservation Act; and
WHEREAS, the proposed new fee for Pu'uhonua o Honaunau would
change the present free entry to a fee of $2 per vehicle and $1 per
person; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is included in a
proposal for legislation to set higher rates with maximum fees of
$10 per vehicle and $5 per person at ten additional parks; and
WHEREAS, the changes being proposed, if approved, will present a
hardship to many people on the Island of Hawaii and will result in
pricing the National Parks out of the budgets of many of our local
residents; and
WHEREAS, the proposed entry fee increases would result in less
use of the National Parks in Hawaii County and would deny enjoyment
of the scenery, natural and historic objects, and wild life in the
two National Parks; and
WHEREAS, the Island of Hawaii is geographically isolated and its
residents have very few affordable options for visiting wilderness
areas.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF 'THE COUNTY OF
