RESOLUTION No. 4x2 92
WHEREAS, THE PERPETUATION OF OUR NATIVE Hawaiian culture
has always been a priority of the Hawaii County Council; and
WHEREAS, With the tremendous growth and success of the
annual Merrie Monarch Festival, the Hula has been reestablished
as an art form of ancient and modern expression of Hawaiian
lifestyles; and
WHEREAS, the benefits derived by the County of Hawaii
from such cultural activities as the Merrie Monarch Festival are
best measured by the thousands of visitors who annually attend
the Festival and its worldwide exposure as t_he "Hula Capitol of
the World"; and
WHEREAS, it is the Council's desire that the County of
Hawaii establishes as priority the enhancement and perpetuation
of Hawaiian cultural; and
WHEREAS, many community organizations also provide annual
events for the benefit of our residents such as the Kamehameha
Day festivities, and Kona Coffee Festival in Kona, the Merrie
Monarch, Malia Puka 0' Kalani Festivals, Spring Fair, Miss Aloha
Hawaii Pageant, Hawaii County Fair in Hilo, Naalehu Fourr_h of
July festivities in Ka'u, Western Week in Honokaa; and
WHEREAS, the sponsors of such activities should be given
an opportunity to secure the use of County facilities which are
needed for their events on an annual basis.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE Council of the County
of Hawaii that it request the Department of Parks & Recreation
to propose amendments to Rule 8. Which will permit scheduling
of facilities for annual events on a multi-year basis.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a true copy of this
resolution be transmitted to the Honorable Lorraine R. Inouye,
Mayor, County of Hawaii and Charmaine Kamaka, Director,
Department of Parks and Recreation.
