RESOLUTION No. g24 92
WHEREAS, major park facilities in Puna have been destroyed
by the current east rift Kilauea eruption; and
WHEREAS, the park facility at Pohoiki is over crowded and
does not provide for swimming and water related activities due
to the existing boat ramp; and
WHEREAS, `_here exist no other public park facilities
available for water or picnic activities for families to enjoy
in the Puna district; and
WHEREAS, there exist no immediate plans to acquire park
facilities by the State or County in the Puna district; and
WHEREAS, `_he County shall be provided funds from the
Federal Emergency Management Agency for park and other public
properties destroyed by the eruption; and
WHEREAS, there exist private properties along the Pohoiki
shoreline that would be ideal for park developmen`_; and
WHEREAS, private property may be acquired through
negotiation or condemnation for the public purpose of
establishing public park for development; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNTY COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII, that the Department of Parks and Recreation submit a
plan of action, identifying the various options and cost of
acquisition or condemnation and development of various private
parcels that would be ideal for park development; identify
state lands and t_he various options and costs of development of
such lands for park development; determine the costs for
improvements or other disposition for the Pohoiki park; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the report be submitted to the
Council prior to April 15, 1992; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
provided to the Mayor of the County of Hawaii and Charmaine
Kamaka, t_he Director of Parks and Recreation.
