RESOLUTION No. 443 92
WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Council advocates the promotion and
expansion of diversified agriculture in the County of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, macadamia nuts which ranks first among the diversified
crops are extremely important to the County of Hawaii's economy
contributing over $30 million per year revenue; and
WHEREAS, the significant increases in the production of locally
grown macadamia nuts coupled with the increase in the importation of
cheap foreign macadamia nuts resulted in an over supply of nuts
which is too large to be accommodated by the existing macadamia nut
market; and
WHEREAS, the over supply of macadamia nuts lead to significant
financial losses to the local farmers from spoilage while the nuts
are held due to lack of processing capacity and timely marketing; and
WHEREAS, the price of Hawaii-grown macadamia nuts has
diminished recently, largely due to foreign competition; and
WHEREAS, any threat to the macadamia nut industry also
threatens our County's economic health.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it urges the United States International Trade
Commission and our State Congressional Officers to expedite the
completion of the investigation of foreign competition in macadamia
nuts and, if unfair trading practices are found, to institute
measures to curb such practices.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Hawaii State Department of
Agriculture continue to assist the macadamia nut industry in
expanding the market share for Hawaii grown macadamia nuts.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk transmit copies of
this Resolution to the Secretary of the United States International
Trade Commission, Chairperson of the Board of Agriculture, Director
of the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism and
to the President of the Hawaii Macadamia Nut Association.
