RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the world's largest telescope, the LJ. M. Keck I
Telescope was completed Tuesday April 14, 1992 atop P4auna Kea
Volcano at 13,600 feet on the island of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, "the Keck" is a tribute to technology and features a
mirror made of 36 half-ton hexagonal segments pieced together t_o
form a single smooth mirror surface which is 33 feet in diameter; and
WHEREAS, this telescope will extend astronomers' vision into
space so scientists can learn how the universe evolved and is
continuing to expand.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it congratulates the California Association for Research
in Astronomy, a partnership of the University of California and
Caltech for building this telescope.
BE IT FURTHEk RESOLVED that the W. M. Keck Foundation be
commended on its futuristic vision by funding this special project.
BE IF FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be sent_ to
r_he W. M. Keck Observatory Headquarters; Institute for Astronomy, U.
H. Manna; Office of the President of California Institute of
Technology; Office of the President of the University of California
at Berkeley; and W. M. Keck Foundation.
