HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 455 Draft 01 1988-1992COUNTY OF HAWAII _ we STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION No. 455 92 WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Council advocates the promotion and expansion of diversified agriculture in the County of Hawaii; and WHEREAS, the Kona coffee industry has developed superior quality coffee and a great reputation; and WHEREAS, the recent influx of cheap foreign imported coffee to the United States in the last year has entered the domestic markets developed by the local coffee industry; and WHEREAS, the importation of foreign coffee has adversely affected the price of coffee and has made it difficult for the growers to compete; and WHEREAS, the coffee industry is currently experiencing marketing problems and there is a need for assistance; and WHEREAS, there exists no collective effort to collect funds from all producers to create and promote marketing programs, set quality standards, and expand research and development for field, factory, and market. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED HY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it requests Hawaii's congressional delegates to seek assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to investigate foreign competition of coffee and, if unfair trading practices are found, to institute measures to curb such practices. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it requests the County Administration to assist the Kona Coffee industry in organizing a cooperative organization for the local coffee growers in Hawaii to help themselves develop realistic programs for assessments, quality control, and marketing. BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk transmit copies of this Resolution to the Kenneth R. Mason, Secretary, U. S. International Trade Commission; Yukio Kitagawa, Chairman, Board of Agriculture; Murray Towill, Director, Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, State of Hawaii, and Jeff Citron, President, Kona Coffee Growers Cooperative.
