Home My WebLink AboutRES 508 Draft 01 1988-1992COUNTY OF HAVi6,A~~~ ~{;.;::STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION No S(.~8 J2 WHEREAS, the island of Kaho'olawe is culturally significant because it is "wahi kapu" (sacred land), a "pu'uhonua" (place of refuge), and a learning center for the sciences of astronomy and navigation; and WHEREAS, Kaho'olawe serves as a continuing link and delicate strand to ancestral Polynesia through its Moikeha legends; and WHEREAS, the abundant marine resources in the pristine ocean surrounding Kaho'olawe have been utilized for subsistence living and cultural and religious practices; and WHEREAS, Kaho'olawe served as a significant place of healing for the people of Hawaii; and WHEREAS, King David Kalakaua underwent a cleansing ceremony on Kaho'olawe at the bequest of his Kahuna; and WHEREAS, others continue this practice; and WHEREAS, Kaho'olawe, has provided peace to those in mental torment and strength to those in failing health; and WHEREAS, Kaho'olawe can be the source of healing for us all, "Ua ola loko e ke aloha aina" (love gives life from within); and WHEREAS, Kaho'olawe including adze quarries, temples, dwellings, camp the detailed and complex and WHEREAS, Kaho'olawe prehistoric and historic development; and has over 600 sites and 2,000 features, petroglyph clusters, fishing shrines, sites and burial sites, which illustrates record of nearly 1,000 years of habitation; is the only Hawaiian island where the settlement system has been unaffected by WHEREAS, on March 18, 1981, Kaho'olawe attained National significance as a cultural, historical and archaeological treasure when it was designated an archaeological district and placed on the National Register of Historic Places; and WHEREAS, since 1959, the Hawaii State Legislature acted on at least nine measures which asked the United States Government to cease military use of Kaho'olawe and twelve measures which called for return of the island to the people of Hawaii; and WHEREAS, under the terms of a court ordered Consent Decree with the United States Navy, the Protect Kaho'olawe 'Ghana has undertaken stewardship responsibilities for protection and restoration of Kaho'olawe's spiritual customs and practices; and WHEREAS, the 101st Congress of the United States of America constituted the Kaho'olawe Island Conveyance Commission "to study and recommend terms and conditions for returning Kaho'olawe Island, Hawaii, from the United States to the State of Hawai'i." NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that August 21 and 22, 1992, are hereby proclaimed as days when the residents of the County of Hawaii are asked to acknowledge that the sacred island of Kaho'olawe is a historically significant place of healing. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Governor of the State of Hawaii be encouraged to designate August 21 and 22, 1992, as days when the residents of the State acknowledge that the sacred island of Kaho'olawe is a historically significant place of healing.
