RESOLUTION N0. 543 yZ,_
WHEREAS, on Friday, September 11, 1992, Hurricane Iniki swept
through the State of Hawaii and devastated the island of Kauai
causing millions of dollars in damage and countless hours of pain to
the hearts of Hawaiian homesteaders; and
WHEREAS, upon the weakening of Hurricane Iniki, residents as
well as visitors of Kauai ventured out of their shelters and were
ravished at the devastation surrounding them; and
WHEREAS, it was apparent that residents of Kauai were cut off
from the rest of the world as all communication links were severed
by the hurricane; and
WHEREAS, many residents with the loss of shelter and personal
belongings had to pull themselves together and gather their
thoughts, as now, there was more than just work to be done, there
was a whole community to rebuild; and
WHEREAS, just as the break of dawn appeared, so did the
welcoming relief of the Army and Air National Guard's aircrafts; and
WHEREAS, in these aircrafts were the sons and daughters from the
Big Island of Hawaii that were part of the Army and Air National
Guard's rescue mission; and
WHEREAS, upon landing on Kauai, they were as shocked as the
residents to find so much destruction; and
WHEREAS, immediately, the men and women of the Army and Air
National Guard began operations to assist the local authorities in
opening important ground links between the various towns and
districts on the island; and
WHEREAS, some of the many tasks performed by the men and women
of the Army and Air National Guard were clearing roads, setting up
communication systems, patrolling streets and business districts to
prevent looting, providing food and drinking water and helping
evacuate the injured and the sick; and
WHEREAS, most importantly, they provided all of this with their
HUMBLE CARING SMILES that told the residents of Kauai, "You're not
alone, we're here to help in any way we can."
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII, that it recognizes and commends all of these men and women
of the Big Island Army and Air National Guard for their hard,
dedicated and unselfish exemplary work performed in a time of great
need and desperation for the people of Kauai.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies be sent to the Honorable
Lorraine Inouye, Mayor, County of Hawaii; Big Island Army and Air
National Guard.
