WHEREAS, Mr. Richard Kaleioku Palmer Smart, descendent of
King Kamehameha the Great, multimillionaire businessman, renown
actor and philanthropist, passed away on Thursday, November 12,
1992 at the age of 79; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smart, the first Parker in 75 years to directly
control the nation's largest privately owned cattle ranch, worked
with great enthusiasm in the promotion and preservation of that
certain lifestyle affiliated with the Waimea community; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smart will not only be remembered for his
prowess in the performing arts, but also for his generous
contribution of lands for numerous community projects which
includes, but are not limited to Churches, the Waimea Park, Lucy
Henriques Medical Center, Waimea Civic Center, and the Kahilu
Community Theatre; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smart's visions are also reflected at the Parker
School, Hawaii Preparatory Academy, North Hawaii Community
Hospital, and the Keck and Canada France Astronomy Centers; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smart's legacy will be perpetuated by the
554-acre development under the Parker 2020 Master Plan which
details the future growth of the Waimea community; and
WHEREAS, the Waimea community is grieved at the loss of a man
who has unselfishly given so much for the enrichment of their
lives through his educational, health, recreational, and cultural
endeavors.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it extends its condolences and deepest sympathies
to the immediate family and the family of ranch employees of the
late Mr. Richard Kaleioku Palmer Smart.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Parker Ranch and its trustees
be encouraged to continue the vision as left by Mr. Richard
Kaleioku Palmer Smart.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit true copies of this resolution to the immediate family,
and to Mr. Warren Gunderson and Mr. Mel Hewitt, representing the
families of Parker Ranch employees through the Parker Ranch
Foundation and Trust.
