HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 540 Draft 01 1980-1984 RESOLUTION NO. 540 ~~ WHEREAS, after 42 years of tooting the big tuba, Tito Nicolas of Hawaiian Paradise Park retired as a member of the Hawaii County Band; and WHEREAS, Mayor Herbert Matayoshi proclaimed November 28, 1982, as "Tito Nicolas Day", and referred to Tito~as a °livinq treasurer of the Big island" and presented a "Certificate of Appreciation° at his birthday party held at~the wailoa State Park on December 1, 1982; and WHEREAS, upon his arrival from the Philippines in 1930 as an immigrant laborer, he began his involvement.. in music when he joined the Olaa Band, which consisted of all Filipino laborers, lasting until 1939; and WHEREAS, Tito was a member of the Hawaii National Guard Band from 1947 to 1956 and he also found,,.time to-play music for Baclig's Royal Islanders Dance Band from 1942 to 1952; and WHEREAS, Tito was involved in many co~emnnity activities such as being an officer of the Keaau School PTA; President of the 9~, Mile Kumiai; President of the ILWU Unit ,1103 Pension Club; member of the State/County Pension Board; Board member of the Mr. Papaya Corporation; Trustee of the Puna United Church of Christ and the Puna Federal Credit Union. NOW, TAEREFORE,' BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAV7AII that it extends its deepest mahalo to Tito Nicolas for his selfless contributions to the people of the Big Island, not only in the area of music, but for his meritorious services to the various organizations in the Keaau (Olaa) area cnhich he served,, and wishes him good health and a long life. BE IT FIIRTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Aawaii be instructed to remit a true copy of this resolution to Tito Nicolas. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii, this 18th day of January 1983.
