WHEREAS, we of Hawaii are especially proud of our multi-racial
society and the efforts of each ethnic group to demonstrate and share
its own culture for the education and enjoyment of all; and
WHEREAS, the Parker-Hirai Japanese Dance School sponsored the
first Hawaii Island Gherry Blosaom Festival Queen Program on
Friday, January 7, 1983; and
WHEREAS, Diane Yukie Okunami was selected Queen of the Cherry
Blossom Festival Queen Program and will represent the Japanese
.community of IIawaii Island as their official goodwill ambassadress;
and
WHEREAS, the successful Cherry Blossom Festival Queen Program
provided a means to promote a better understanding and appreciation
of the Japanese people, their heritage and culture.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it congratulates Diane Okunami for being chosen the first
Hawaii Island Cherry Blossom Festival Queen.
BE IT FURTIiER RESOLVED that the County Council extends its
appreciation to the Parker-Hirai Japanese Dance School and its Cherry
Blossom Festival Executive Committee for striving to make the Queen
Program a most enjoyable, entertaining and educational affair.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent to
Diane Yukie Okunami; Mr. & Pirs. Yashiro Okunami; Mrs. Tsukie Parker
and Ruth Hirai of the Parker-Iiirai Japanese Dance School; and members
of the Cherry Blossom Festival Executive Committee, Bernie Nakamoto,
Arlene Miyake, Judy Suzuki, and Merle Lai.
