Resolution
WHEREAS, Hawaiian Telephone Company has filed for rate
increases with the Public Utilities Commission which will generate
54 percent more revenues on local service by October 1, 1983; and
WHEREAS, these rate increases come at a most inopportune time
when our economy continues to suffer from the effects of the
prolonged recession forcing many of our commercial entities to
impose cost reduction measures; and
WHEREAS, government units have not escaped the effects of a
poor economy, tax revenues have not kept pace with the public
demands for more government facilities and services; and
WHEREAS, although the Council sympathizes with Hawaiian
Telephone Company in coping with the effects of deregulation, the
proposed rate increase is totally not in tune to the present
economic climate.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it requests the Public Utilities Commission to reject
the rate increase proposal of the Hawaiian Telephone Company.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this Resolution to the Honorable Herbert T.
Matayoshi, Mayor of the County of Hawaii; Mr. Donald M. Kuyper,
President of Hawaiian Telephone Company and Mr. Albert Q. Y. Tom,
Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission.
