Resolution
WHEREAS, West Hawaii's airport, known as Keahole Airport, is,
because of its location, considered one of the safest airports in
Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, this airport, possessing the potential of increased
usage and facility expansion, is a major reference point for our
community; and
WHEREAS, the name Keahole, has been often mispronounced by our
visitors, Kamaaina's, and Kona's predominant Malihini population,
and has caused serious communication problems, especially during
emergencies; and
WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii, along with the
people of Kona, and more specifically, the Kona hotel and business
elements, have recognized this communication shortcoming and
suggest that a name change would be most appropriate.
.NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it urges the State Department of Transportation to
change the name of Keahole Airport to Kona Airport.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be
forwarded to Dr. Ryokichi Higashionna, Director of the Department
of Transportation, the Honorable Richard S. H. Wong, President of
the Senate and the Honorable Henry Peters, Speaker of the House of
Representatives.
