WHEREAS, the 1982 season of the University of Hawaii at Hilo
Women's Volleyball Team was again one of success and
accomplishment as the team displayed the winning ingredients to
opponents in the National Association of Inter-collegiate
Athletics; and
WHEREAS, the team culminated the loss-free season against
small college competi.ti.on by sweeping the NAIA National
Championship Tournament in Denver, Colorado with victories over
Winthrop College 15-5, 15-0, 15-7; Metropolitan State 15-8, 15-2,
15-2; and Texas Wesleyan 15-3, 16-14, 15-7; and
WHEREAS, besides winning the prestigious championship which
justified their national Number One NAIA ranking, the Vulcan team
also collected a host of awards such as; NAIA Coach-of-the-Year
for the second year to Sharon Peterson; Tournament
Most-Valuable-Player for the third consecutive tournament to Edie
Manzano; and subsequent NAIA All-America honors to Edie Manzano
and Alofa Tagataese; and
WHEREAS, the national recognition which Vulcan Wahine
volleyball teams have earned i.s a fantastic accomplishment and
testimony to the dedication, character, perseverance, talent and
spirit of these young women athletes, but most of all is the
lesson which they have given to all of us of their warmth,
togetherness and tremendous love for each other.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it extends its congratulations to the National
Champion University of Hawaii-Hilo Women's Volleyball Team and
coaching staff for another successful season.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be instructed to remit true copies of this Resolution for
presentation to the following team members, coaches and staff at
their banquet-luau to be held on January 20, 1983; Glennie Adams,
Cora Caparida, Lori Ching, Joy Downey, Pauahi Ioane,
Cindy Kapuniai, Marve Keama, Peka Malae, Edie Manzano,
Sheryl Scott, Nalani Spencer, Alofa Tagataese and Ala Vi.ela; Coach
Sharon Peterson; Assistant Coach Richard Tiogangco; Trainer
Linda Rowan; Athletic Director Joey Estrella; Chancellor
Stephen Mitchell and University of Hawaii President Dr. Fujio
Matsuda.
