WHEREAS, Senator Spark M. Matsunaga has long peen a strong
supporter for the development of our Nation's renewable energy and
Peels that we should not let the present temporary stability in
the price and supply of oil jeopardize our progress in developing
alternate sources of energy; and
WHEREAS, Senator Matsunaga, a respected member of the Senate
Finance and Energy Committees, has inPluanced the promotion of
Hawaii as the woxid's foremost lor_ation for testing alternate
energy techniques and serving as the national laboratory to prove
that energy self-sufficiency is attainable; and
WHEREAS, Senator Matsunaga's recent selection by the American
Wind Energy Association (AWEA? as the "Wind Energy Man of the
Yeer" is appropriate recognition for his efforts .i.n fosteri.ng the
development of alternate energy; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Ted Anderson, AWEA President and Program Manager
of Westinghouse's wind energy program, cited Senator Matsunaaa's
efforts in supporting the energy tar. credits, ensuring the _
preservation of the "at risk" rule far investment tax incentives
and providing the vital .leadership in passage of the Wind Energy
Systems Act as reasons for thSs sinUUla.r honor.
NOW, THEREFORE, 8E IT RESOLVEG EiY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it wholeheartedly supports this distinctfor, se
rightfully h.estewed upon our Senator ar;d extends congratulations
to him on this occasion.
dE IT FURTHER RE50LVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
is hereby instructed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the
distinguished Senator Spark M. Matsunaga and members of the U. 5.
Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
