County of Hawaii-State o~ Hawaii
Resolution No. sis 8~
(DRAFT 2)
WHEREAS, the recent relocation of commercial aircraft to the
sanctuary of Hilo's General Lyman Field to escape the ravages of
hurricane "Iwo" manifested the relative ease and ability of that
facility to accommodate such an influx of air traffic; and
WHEREAS, the encouraging increase in visitor arrivals to
Hilo's General Lyman Field may prompt inter-island passenger air
carriers to increase their service to meet this trend; and
WHEREAS, the volume and mix of commercial, military and
general aviation air traffic arriving and departing from Honolulu
International Airport has caused that facility to be rated a "Red
Star" designation by the Airline Pilot's Association; and
WHEREAS, Hilo has long stood as the alternate gateway serving
the State with existing runway and ramp facilities adequate to
meet the needs of current wide-bodied aircraft; and
WHEREAS, a greater volume of passengers arriving in Hilo would
trigger a corresponding increase in the commercial activity of
ancillary enterprises associated with the tourist industry thereby
stimulating the economy of the Big Island; and
WHEREAS, visitors destined for Kona may be better served by
arriving in Hilo and traveling overland to their destination and
avoiding a connecting flight in Honolulu; and
WHEREAS, foreign and domestic flights presently using the
Honolulu International Airport for purposes of refueling and
replenishment of supplies should be directed to the General Lyman
Field facility as it is more than capable of providing such
services; and
o c
WHEREAS, increasing flights to the Big Island would not only
relieve air traffic in Honolulu but also provide more options to
purveyors of commodities who utilize airfreight services into and
out of our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that i.t wholeheartedly supports the consideration of Hilo
as a primary or alternate gateway by those airlines which
presently provide direct flights to Hawaii.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
is hereby instructed to transmit copies of this Resolution to the
Hawaii Visitor's Bureau, the Chambers of Commerce and the
