HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 519 Draft 02 1980-1984~..i O O County of Hawaii-State o~ Hawaii Resolution No. sis 8~ (DRAFT 2) WHEREAS, the recent relocation of commercial aircraft to the sanctuary of Hilo's General Lyman Field to escape the ravages of hurricane "Iwo" manifested the relative ease and ability of that facility to accommodate such an influx of air traffic; and WHEREAS, the encouraging increase in visitor arrivals to Hilo's General Lyman Field may prompt inter-island passenger air carriers to increase their service to meet this trend; and WHEREAS, the volume and mix of commercial, military and general aviation air traffic arriving and departing from Honolulu International Airport has caused that facility to be rated a "Red Star" designation by the Airline Pilot's Association; and WHEREAS, Hilo has long stood as the alternate gateway serving the State with existing runway and ramp facilities adequate to meet the needs of current wide-bodied aircraft; and WHEREAS, a greater volume of passengers arriving in Hilo would trigger a corresponding increase in the commercial activity of ancillary enterprises associated with the tourist industry thereby stimulating the economy of the Big Island; and WHEREAS, visitors destined for Kona may be better served by arriving in Hilo and traveling overland to their destination and avoiding a connecting flight in Honolulu; and WHEREAS, foreign and domestic flights presently using the Honolulu International Airport for purposes of refueling and replenishment of supplies should be directed to the General Lyman Field facility as it is more than capable of providing such services; and o c WHEREAS, increasing flights to the Big Island would not only relieve air traffic in Honolulu but also provide more options to purveyors of commodities who utilize airfreight services into and out of our community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that i.t wholeheartedly supports the consideration of Hilo as a primary or alternate gateway by those airlines which presently provide direct flights to Hawaii. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is hereby instructed to transmit copies of this Resolution to the Hawaii Visitor's Bureau, the Chambers of Commerce and the Presidents of American Airlines, Canadian Pacific Airlines, Continental Airlines, Hawaii Express Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Pacific East Airlines, Pan American Airlines, United Airlines, Western ,Airlines and World Airways.
