HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 517 Draft 01 1980-1984/, - - - - _ County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii Resolution WHEREAS, since May 22, 1972, the Kukuipahu Heiau located in North Kohala was duly identified. and. approved for placement on the Hawaii Register of Historic Places; and WHEREAS, such an honor bestowed upon an accepted historic site, mandates that the State of Hawaii provide the necessary care and maintenance deserving of this recognition; and WHEREAS, the Kukuipahu Heiau is presently overgrown with unsightly vegetation and is in a state of disrepair due to sheer neglect, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it supports the purpose of a resolution adopted by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs at its annual convention held on November 11 - 13, 1982, which urged the state in conjunction with the Association and the Kohala Hawaiian Civic Club to implement as soon as possible, a program to restore, preserve, and protect the Kukuipahu Heiau befitting of its status a valuable historic site. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is hereby instructed to remit copies of this resolution to Governor George R. Ariyoshi; Susumu Ono, Chairman and Member, Department of Land. and Natural Resources; Wendell Kam, State Historic Site Preservation Officer; Benson Lee, President of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, and Mrs. Rachel Kaoo, President of the Kohala Hawaiian Civic Club. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii, this 18th day of January 1983. No. RESOLUTION N0. ~~ • `~~ z O O RESOLUITON U03 CALLING E PRESERVATION OF THE UIPAHU H IAU IN NORTH KOHALA WHEREAS, The Kukuipahu Heiau in North Kohala has been identified as a historic site, and WHEREAS, The Kukuipahu Heiau was placed on the Hawaii Register of Historic Places on May 22, 1972, and WHEREAS, Since that time, there has been no noticeable action to preserve the site, and WHEREAS, The site is currently overgrown and may possible be in disrepair, NOW, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs at its Convention in Honolulu on November 11, 12, and 13, 1982, urge that State Historic Sites Preservation Officer to work in conjunction with the Hawaii Council, Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs and the Kohala Hawaiian Civic Club, to take the necessary steps to protect and preserve this valuable site, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the State Historic Site Preservation Officer, Wendell Kam, the State Director of Land and Natural Resources, Susumu Ono, and the Governor of the State of Hawaii, George Ariyoshi. Yamashiro Chairman & Presiding Officer Hawaii County Council Hawaii County Building Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Dear Councilman Yamashiro: Thank you for Hawaii County Council Resolution No. 517-83 regarding . Kukuipahu Heiau in North Kohala. This heiau is one of a number of sites and districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is owned by the Kohala Corporation. However, in a recent quitclaim action, the Kohala Corporation agreed to transfer the title of the heiau and lands within 100 feet of the site to the state government. Aland survey has been scheduled to facilitate this transfer. The state negotiated this transfer to obtain a measure of protection for the heiau. The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will have jurisdiction in this matter when the property is transferred to the state. There are no immediate plans to take any preservation steps at the heiau, other than to prevent the destructive growth of Christmas berry shrubs on the heiau walls. Major restoration efforts have not been discussed. However, the DLNR would welcome and consider proposals to restore the heiau, if undertaken by county or private initiative.
