RESSOLUTION NO. _475 82
WHEREAS, West Hawaii will once again be the host of the
Bud Light Ironman Triathlon World Championship for the third
consecutive time; and
WHEREAS, this grueling event is a supreme test of each
participant's mental and physical capabilities as it begins
with a 2.4-mile open ocean swim, followed by a 112-mile bicycle
race and ends with an exciting 26.2-mile marathon run; and
WHEREAS, on October 9, 1982, 850 men and women of all
ages will challenge the demanding but beautifully planned
course; and
WHEREAS, ABC's Wide World of Sports and other media
outlets will document this sporting extravaganza to be
transmitted to vast audiences throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, the growing popularity of Triathlon and the
media exposure will enhance the image of the West Hawaii area
and hopefully convince the sponsors to make it the Triathlon's
permanent race site; and
WHEREAS, an endeavor of this magnitude involving
hundreds of competitors, thousands of dedicated volunteers and
race coordinators, and an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 spectators,
is no doubt a major event on the Big Island; and
WHEREAS, the positive economic impact the Triathlon has
made on our island's economy, commands encouragement and
support from the government and public sector.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that it supports all activities related to the
Bud Light Ironman Triathlon World Championship and
congratulates the competitors, the organizers, sponsors and the
thousands of volunteers who have made the Triathlon the
prestigious sporting attraction it is today.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii remit a true copy of this resolution to Valerie Silk,
Race Director, to convey to the sponsors, organizers,
participants, volunteers and supporters, the Council's wishes
for a safe and successful event.
