Resolution No. 474 82
(REVISED)
WHEREAS, agriculture has long been an important cornerstone in
the economic and social structure of our island State and County;
and
WHEREAS, Hawaii County's strong commitment toward
strengthening its economic base through diversity is encouraged by
the substantial gains in receipts of diversified crops which
brought growers $43.9 million, an increase of 26.5% over 1978; and
WHEREAS, the shipment of agricultural commodities such as
flowers, nursery products, ginger, macadamia nuts, coffee, and
papayas to the mainland market realized millions of dollars in
sales for the Big Island; and
WHEREAS, Big Island agriculturalists have been constantly
plagued with limited, costly, unpredictable export schedules and
service in the past affecting their production projections; and
WHEREAS, a dependable, competitive air cargo service
guaranteeing performance and longevity would provide local growers
with a viable, promising alternative to their present situation;
and
WHEREAS, Flying Dutchmen Air Cargo, Inc., a Big Island-based
corporation, is currently entertaining prospects of establishing
an air cargo freight service direct from Hilo to the mainland on a
regularly scheduled basis.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it congratulates the Flying Dutchmen Air Cargo, Inc.
in its efforts to provide air cargo service to the mainland out of
Hilo.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it encourages farmers, growers,
ranchers and shippers to unite in their study of the proposed
service so that its findings can represent a solid commitment in
the best interest of all parties and the future of our Island.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it directs the Clerk of the County
of Hawaii to remit copies of this Resolution to Flying Dutchmen
Air Cargo, Inc.; Terrance R. Shumaker, Esq.; and the various
agricultural organizations.
