RESOLUTION NO. `~54 62
WHEREAS, on Thursday, September 9, 1982, the well-known
Mauro Theater will cease to operate as a theater after an estimated
sixty years of memorable existence; and
WHEREAS, in its early beginning, it was known as the
Yurakwan Theater and featured such events as boxing matches, stage
shows and a variety of other kinds of live etitertairunent until
1937 when it was converted into a movie theater; and
WHEREAS, Mr. John Costa, who first worked there as a movie
booker in 1937 and has been its manager since 1945, refers to the
building as the grand ,old lady who has survived two tidal waves
and has been better and happier days; and
WHEREAS, despite -this inauspicious closing of this local
landmark, it had for many years during its heyday served as the
hub of the night life of downtown Hilo, and will for the several
generations of people be a nostalgic reminder of the memorable
"goad old days".
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that on the occasion of the closing of the Mauro Theater
that it extends its deepest appreciation to the owners and loyal
employee, Mr. John Costa,'for the many years of enjoyable enter-
taina+ent.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit true copies of this resolution to "Mauro, Theater of the
West, Inc., and Mr. John Costa.
