RESOLUTION• NO. X52 ~2
WHEREAS, September 3, 1982., was an exceptional day for Native
Son George Donald DeCosta, Pastor of St. Mary Gate of Heaven
Catholic Church iMalia Puka O Ralani) in Reaukaha, for he was
installed as Pastox of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and administrator
• of St. Joseph's Elementary and High Schools; and
WHEREAS, while attending St. Joseph's School, he was encouraged
by Maryknoll's Father Rieman to become a priest, and upon gradua-
tion in11955 he entered St. Stephen's Seminary.at Kaneohe then
continued his studies in 1958 at St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo
Park, California; and
WHEREAS, upon completion of his education in philosophy and
theology, in 1964 be was ordained at bur Lady of Peace Cathedral
and assigned to St. Theresa's parish in Honolulu as associate
pastor until 1968; and
WHEREAS, he was chaplain for Damien High School in 1968,
taught at St. Louis High School in 1969, served as director of
the Confraternity Qf Christian Doctrine for the Diocese, was
associate director in the Catholic Youth Or_ganizatian in charge
of the CYO Camp in Hauula, and was the youngest member to be
appointed by Bishop James L. Sweeney to the Diocesan Liturgy
Co®mittee; and

WHEREAS, he updated the liturgy at Melia Puka O Kalani by
forming the Sig Island Liturgy Committee and has for the peat ten
years used fulltime lay ministers to assist him in parish work,
a practice that has. been adopted by other parishes in the diocese;
and
WHEREAS, Father DeCosta has appeared before the Hawaii County
Council on numerous .occasions to give the invocation or to voice
his concern on issues being considered by the Council.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY'
OF HAWAII that it extends its congratulations to the imminently
qualified :Father George Donald DeCosta upon his added assignment
by the Diocese Selection Board in H®nolulu to head the
St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Elementary and High Schools.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clark of the County of
Hawaii be instructed to remit a true copy of this resolution to
Father George Donald DeCosta; to the Moat Reverend Joseph A.
Ferrario, Bishop of Honolulu; to his parents Mr.., and Mrs. George
DeCosta; and to his sister Mrs. Pamela Carter:
