WHEREAS, the Congressional Senate-House Conference Committee
passed a bill on August 19, 1982, raising the domestic airline
ticket tax from 5% to 8% as part of a major tax package geared to
reduce the federal deficit; and
WHEREAS, this Legislation, awaiting the President's signature,
retains the present Hawaii exemption from the 8% increase by
proposing a flat $3.00 a passenger fee on the over-water portion of
flights to the West Coast; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii's Senator Spark M. Matsunaga, as a member of the
Senate Finance Committee, was instrumental in authoring preliminary
language in the bill which maintains a lesser tax on the over-water
portion of these flights.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it wholeheartedly supports the position of
Senator Matsunaga in his effort to retain the Hawaii exemption from
this increase in the domestic airline ticket tax.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is
hereby instructed to transmit a copy of this resolution to the
Honorable Spark M. Matsunaga, U. S. Senator, the Honorable Daniel K.
Inouye, U. S. Senator, the Honorable Cecil Heftel,
U. S. Representative and the Honorable Daniel K. Akaka,
U. S. Representative..
