Resolution
WHEREAS, on August 6th and August 9th,- 1945, the cities of
Hiroshima and Na4asaki were destroyed by atomic bombs; and
T.ATHEREAS, as a result, there were an estimated 720,000
victims, 340,000 of whom died within five years; and.
WI-IEREAS, thousands of survivors live in Janan and other
countries, including the [Jnited States, suffering the physical,
medical, psychological, and social effects of. the bombing; and.
T9HEREAS, it is important to remember the awesome destruction
of those early rudimentax-~~ bombs especially when our current
nuclear stockpiles are known to be hundreds of times more
destructive; and
WHEREAS, in order to prevent future Hiroshimas' and
tdagasakis', everyone must actively and, earnestly seek peace.
NON, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HP.T9AII that it warmly supports the observance on August 8th, 1982
of PEACE SUNDAY when Big Islanders can remember the victims of
the atomic bombs and give thanks for nearly 40-years of nuclear
peace.
BE IT FURTHER PF,SOLVED that the Clerk of the Coo.nty of
Hawaii be instructed to remit a true copy of this resolution to
Kendall Ellingwood, Jr., Big Island Coordinator, Ground Zero..
