HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 431 Draft 01 1980-1984 0 0 County of Hawaii-State of Hawaii Resolution No. ~s~ e2 WHEREAS, United A.irlines~ the Big Island's only remaining major Mainland tp Hilo air carrier, unexpectedly announced that it will downgrade its level of services by utilizing smaller DC-IIs instead of the present DC-10 aircrafts; and [9HEREAS, this untimely move will not only mean a reduced passenger capacity but more importantly it would cut back its air cargo capabilities which in turn would adversely affect our already troubled papaya and floral industries; a.nd WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii has been providing United Airlines with steady and growing freight business throughout the years and more recently both entities entered into a $500,000 campaign to promote the Big Island, causing a resurgence of business sector confidence and a mutually conceived plan to better the economic ills of our island; and WHEREAS, after 14-1/2 years of working together, the County of Hawaii and United Airlines had developed a special rapport as it struggled and prevailed through the many challenges and crisis due to the economic conditions of the National, State and County levels, which endeavors apparently were believed to be successful; and. WHEREAS, comes now a unilateral decision in the part of. United Airlines which directly contradicts their often stated long standing commitment to the Bia Island. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that in light of the esteemed relationship United Airlines and. the County of Hawaii has had, that it accords the County the opportunity to further discuss with them other possible alternatives other than the planned conversion of using smaller ai.rcrafts•. i e O O BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be instructed to remit true conies of this resolution to Mr. Eddie E. Carlson, Chairman of the Board; Mr. Dick R. G. Ferris, President and Chief Executive Officer; Mr. Richard Post, Vice President, Hawaii Region; Mr. Stanley Randolph, F.egional Sales Manager; Mr. Donn Nishimura, Hilo Office Dlanager of United Airlines; Mr. Chuck Novak, Manager of Public Relations, and Mavor Herbert T. Mat ayoshi, County of Hawaii, with the Council's urgent reciuest to postpone the September 1982, conversion date until other alternatives can be discussed. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii this day of 1982.
