County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii
Resolution
WHEREAS, the State Geothermal Energy Advisory Committee has
recommended funding in the amount of $150,000 by the State Department
of Planning and Economic Development (DPED) in order to launch a year-
long study of the quality of air in the East Rift Zone of Kilauea
Volcano in preparation for setting standards for future geothermal
energy projects in Puna; and
WHEREAS, the study will also include a collection of rainwater
samples from catchment systems which are used for drinking purposes;
and
WHEREAS, the solution to the depolarization of groups who fear
deterioration of the environment in Puna and the developers of geothermal
projects may be provided by the conclusion of this State-Base-Line-Studies.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII
that it supports the study recommended by the State Geothermal Energy
Advisory Committee and requests the State Department of Planning and
Economic Development to allocate the necessary funds for immediate
implementation.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the contractor who is appointed to do
the baseline studies be asked to make a separate environmental study of
the demonstration geothermal project at Pohoiki.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be
instructed to remit a copy of this resolution to the Honorable George
Ariyoshi, Governor of the State of Hawaii, and Mr. Hideto Kono, Director
of the State Department of Planning and Economic Development.
