RESOLUTION NO. ~,g,-~g;~
WHEREAS, in 1981, the Hawaii County Council created the
Sub-Committee on Beautification with the intended purpose of
enhancing the beauty and attractiveness of the Biq Island; and
WHEREAS, such a worthy endeavor has since evolved into programs
that are about to become a reality beginning with the appropriate
ceremonies along with Mayor Herbert Matayoshi's Proclamation of
July 28, 1983, as "Beautify Hawaii County Day" whereby all County of
Hawaii vehicles will now carry "Beautify Hawaii County" bumper
stickers donated by Councilman William Kawahara; and
WHEREAS, the sub-committee has clearly stated its goals such as:
1. The elimination of litter in public places,
roads, parks, and public facilities,
2. The prevention of the disposal of garbage on
private and public lands,
3. The improvement for the maintenance of roadsides,
including grass cutting, tree trimming, shoulder
improvement and the judicious use of chemicals
and poisons,
4. The proper disposal of abandoned vehicles,
5. The beautification of our roadsides with
appropriate plantings,
6. The development of special scenic areas with
controls to protect the area; and
WHEREAS, other positive evidences of progress in the
beautification of our island is the $8,000 appropriation for the
fabrication and installation of litter signs, along with an annual
sum of fifty cents per car registered in this county set aside for
both the highway beautification and the disposal of abandoned vehicle
programs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it commends all the individuals and organizations that
have assisted in a variety of activities which have now culminated in
ongoing projects which will enhance and preserve the beauty and charm
of our island community.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be
instructed to transmit true copies of this resolution to
Mayor Herbert T. Matayoshi; Beautification Coordinator, Hardy Iida;
Councilman William S. Kawahara; the Community Beautification Council
and the Kona Outdoor Circle.
