RESOLUTION N0. 688 - 83
WHEREAS, Dr. Pete T. Okumoto has retired after 26 years of
County Service, first as assistant County Physician and later as
Head County Physician; and
WHEREAS, when a person retires, it is a good time to take note
of his achievements and to show our appreciation in some form, for
his contributions and services rendered.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that Dr. Okumoto be formally recognized for his achievements
and services by having the following biographical sketch made a part
of the record of a regular meeting and filed in the office of the
County Clerk:
Born on March 1, 1916, in Hilo, Hawaii
Graduated, Hilo High School, 1935; attended,
University of Hawaii, Manoa, 1936-38; received his
Bachelor of Science degree from Stanford University,
1940; received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the
University of Michigan Medical School, 1943;
Interned, Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, Michigan, 1943-44;
Major, U: S. Army Medical Corps, World War II (North
Apennine & Po Valley campaigns with 10th Mountain
Division);

Resident physician at St. Joseph's Hospital, Fort
Wayne, Indiana, 1947, and at Kapiolani Maternity &
Gynecological Hospital, Honolulu, 1948;
Private practice, Hilo, 1948;
Served as assistant County Physician and Head County
Physician under five County administrators
(James Kealoha, Thomas Cook, Shunichi Kimura,
Helene Hale, Herbert Matayoshi, 1953 -1983;
Member, Board of Regents, University of Hawaii,
1961-68;
Recipient, "Robins Award for Community Service By a

Lions Club, 442nd Veterans Association of Hawaii, Hilo

National Masters Swimming Championship, Portland,
Oregon, 1982 (placed second in one event, member of
second-place team in another event); ranked among
nation's top 10 in 65-69 age group, on basis of
mailed-in times for 10 events, 1981-82; current holder
of one record and former holder of two records, State
Masters program; current holder of 12 County Masters
records in three age groups;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII
that it expresses its deepest appreciation and commends
Dr. Pete T. Okumoto for doing years of distinguished and dedicated
service and for living up to the ideal of service above self.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Council extends its best
wishes to Dr. Okumoto as he continues in private practice and
community activities.
BE IT FINALLY that the Cleric of the County of Hawaii is hereby
directed to remit a true copy of this resolution to
Dr. Peter Okumoto, as a token of appreciation for a job well done.
