Resolution
WHEREAS, Young Brothers, Ltd.'s request to reduce the frequency
of service to the Port of Hilo has been granted by the State Public
Utilities Commission, the regulatory body for in-state cargo
transportation; and
WHEREAS, Young Brothers proposes to make up the cargo space
reductions by utilizing larger barges and adding an additional barge
to the tow by a single tug; and
WHEREAS, the farmers' on the Big Island have complained that
their problems are with the schedule rather than available cargo
space; and
WHEREAS, the limited schedule forces growers to pick and ship
their commodities in larger quantities which may result in a lesser
quality product being placed on the market; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Council is very concerned with the
impact reduced services may have upon the diversified agricultural
industry, especially those involving fresh produce.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it encourages the Public Utilities Commission to
reconsider its decision to grant Young Brothers, Ltd.'s request tq
reduce their service to the Port of Hilo.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Young Brothers, Ltd., also be
encouraged to reassess its request keeping in mind the importance of
its service to the Big Island farming industry.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County of Hawaii transmit copies
of this resolution to the Public Utilities Commission, Young
Brothers, Ltd., Mr. Robert Souza of the Papaya Administrative
Committee, Mr. Robert Shioji, President of the Hawaii County Farm
Bureau, and to Mr. Yoshitaka Takashiba, President of the West Hawaii
Farm Bureau. .
