HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 682 Draft 01 1980-1984~, -..v ~ /~ O County of Hawaii-State of Hawaii Resolution No. 682 83 WHEREAS, August 6, 1983, is the 38th anniversary of the detonation of a nuclear bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan and on August 9, 1945 a similar bomb exploded over the city of Nagasaki, which marks the first and only explosion of nuclear weapons used in actual warfare; and WHEREAS, more than 175,000 people were instantly killed by the explosions and hundreds of thousands of others were condemned to months or years of dreadful suffering, indicating that the use of powerful nuclear weapons in warfare is immoral and unjust, that such use will result in ultimate human and environmental disaster; and WHEREAS, the proliferation of nuclear weapons in this era of international tensions poses a growing threat of intentional first strike or accidental holocaust and threatens the very existence of civilization; and WHEREAS, polls indicate that a vast majority of people everywhere want peace and nuclear disarmament: A nuclear freeze resolution House of Representatives, General Assembly, by the Non-Aligned Countries, by n~ and community referenda--yet weapons continues unabated. was adopted by the U. S. by the United Nations Summit Meeting of the xmerous state legislatures the production of nuclear NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it extends its sympathy to the survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki tragedies and work for preventing such slaughter from ever occurring again. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council support observance of 1983 Hiroshima Day and call upon religious groups to observe the occasion in sermons and prayer on August 6 and 7, and urge all persons who want to preserve life and civilization to participate in public activities planned for August 6, or to take whatever personal action he or she considers significant. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii remit a true copy of this resolution to Mr. Lance Foreman, Chairperson of the 1983 Hiroshima Memorial.
