RESOLUTION N0. GSS 8~
WFIEREAS, GOMOKU is an international table game origr ing
Japan and has achieved world-wide acclaim; and
WHEREAS, the game of Gomoku stresses ,mental concentra ion,
strategy, logic, as well as good sportsmanship; and

4~HEREAS, many first generation and second generation
Japanese-Americans and other nationalities have enjoyed the game and
its teaching; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Parks & Recreation through its
Elderly Activities Division sponsors annual island-wide competition
to perpetuate the game and its cultural 'Heritage; and
WHEREAS, the Big Island Gomoku Club is contemplating challenging
the statewide and Japan's champion, in order to further its goal of
friendship and sportsmanship with other Gomoku Clubs; and
WHEREAS, the following are the 1983 Gomo{cu contestants among the
senior citizens:
Namiwo Hanaumi, Grand Champion and Instructor
Tasuke Yasukochi, Novice Champion
Zenji Ege, Runner-Up
Tanji Yasukochi, Runner-Up
hiasami Okui, Runner-Up
Tadashi Sadanaga, Runner-Up
OTHER CONTESTANTS WERE:
K. Iwata, T. Koizumi, T. Momita, S. h7iyata6:e,
Istuki Sakoda, T. Tabata, M. Kawasaki,
H. Kinoshita, K. Tamashiro, H. Tanaka,
A. Yamamoto, H. Oie, and Fred Matsuda.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it extends its congratulations to all the participants
and especially recognizes Namiwo Hanaumi, who spent many volunteer
hours visiting various senior citizen centers, giving instructions,
and encouraging the art of mental gymnastics, called GOMOKU.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
remits a copy of this resolution to Namiwo Hanaumi, 1983 Grand
Champion; Tasuki Yasukochi, Novice Champion; and George Yoshida of
the Elderly Activities Division, Parks and Recreation Department,
County of Hawaii.
