HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 641 Draft 01 1980-1984/\ - _ ,. 1 ~ O County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii Resolution WHEREAS, the state Board on Geographic Names has recently recommended a change of name of the world renown resort town of "Kailua-Kona" to its historical name of "Kailua"; and WHEREAS, tourism has evolved into a major employment industry in the Kona district centralizing in the town of"Kailua-Kona;" and 4~HEREAS, the County of Hawaii has expended substantial sums of monies toward tourism promotion with primary emphasis being placed upon the identity of final destination points on the Big Island; and WHEREAS, the presence of three localities bearing the name of "Kailua" throughout the State, namely on the islands of Hawaii, Oahu and Maui, causes confusion for residents as well as visitors to Hawaii; and WHEREAS, "Kailua-Kona" has been well-established and a name change to "Kailua" would create serious problems for businesses and residents. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it urges the state Board on Geographic Names to reconsider their recent decision and change the name of "Kailua" to "Kailua-Kona." BE IT .FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be sent to Mr. Robert Schmitt, Chairman of the state Board on Geographic Names. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii, this 22nd day of June 1983.
