RESOLUTION NO. ~s3~ ~`~
WHEREAS, on May 14-15, 1983, the Honomu Hongwanji Mission
celebrated its 85th year of existence and progress; and
WHEREAS, in 1898, recognizing the necessity for a place of
worship for the Japanese immigrants who had come from the prefectures
of Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Okinawa, Fukuoka, and Kumamoto, Shin
Buddhism was first established on the Big Island with the
appointment of the Mission's first Bishop along with the commitment
to build a new temple for its interested followers; and
WHEREAS, since this humble beginning, the Honomu Hongwanji
Mission has been served by respected Bishops such as the Reverends
Honi Satomi, Chisho Uchida, Chiho Miyagawa, Jisen Okabe,
Jogen Saito, Zenko Saigusa, Sensho Hida, Ryusho Himeji,
Tsuumei Murakami, Hiroo Kahara, and Junkai Toyoura; and
WHEREAS, the membership headed by the president of the Kyodan
has, over these years, been responsible for many community deeds and
services, is also credited for the expansion, the improvement and
the upkeep of the temple, has been led by esteemed community leaders
such as Sozaburo Kuritani, Hatsuzo Tanimoto, Kichiji Fujii,
Kumaki Tokumaru, Alex Akita, Kazuki Okura, Arata Kansako,
Satoru Kurisu, Masao Murai, Yachi Horio, Shintaro Higa, and
Yasushi Kurisu; and
WHEREAS, the Honomu Hongwanji Mission's Kyodan and its
affiliated organizations maintain impressive membership totals, such
as the Kyodan with 186; Fujinkai, 149; Kyoukai, 66; Senior YBA, 15;
Junior YBA, 13; Sunday School, 45; and has with its teachings and
community work, been a positive and contributing factor towards the
well being of the people in this area.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that in recognition and commemoration of the Honomu Hongwanji
Mission's 85th Anniversary, it extends the Council's congratulations
and wishes for their continued success and community service.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of
Hawaii be instructed to remit true copies of
the Reverend Junkai Toyoura and Mr. Yasushi
of the Honomu Hongwanji Mission Kyodan.
