Resolution No. ~z~ 8a
WHEREAS, Hawaii Patient Enrichment, Inc., (HPEI) recently
announced the formation of Hospice Care for Hawaii Island (HH); and
WHEREAS, hospice.is a program caring for the terminally ill and
their families of which efforts are directed toward assisting the
patients to live as comfortable a life, providing respite care,
giving counseling and emotional support to the immediate families;
and
WHEREAS, hospice programs are offered at the Hospital or at the
home-based of the terminally ill by coordinating the service of
Professionals and trained volunteers; and
WHEREAS, HPEI is a non-profit organization whose programs are
supported by grants from churches, trusts, foundations, as well as
from individual and community donations and at present there are no
charges levied for the hospice services; and
WHEREAS, the certified trained volunteers committed to the
hospice concepts are willing to give their "Gift of Self" and "Gift
of Presence" to the terminally ill patient and their families by
working closely with the Coordinator and medical staff; and
WHEREAS, HPEI is presently headquartered at the Hilo Hospital
and are seeking for active volunteers and sustaining members within
the Big Island Communities, in support of the HH programs and
services given to the needy.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it call upon the people of the Big Island to become a
member of the Hawaii Patient Enrichment, Inc. by signing up to
become a certified volunteer after training or become a sustaining
member and extend its congratulations and heartfelt appreciation to

many unnamed people who made this important contribution to aid the
terminally ill and their families, especially when they don't have
any place to seek for counseling and assistance.
BE .IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be
directed to remit a copy of this resolution to Hospice of Hawaii
Island Coordinator Shigeko Chang and also thank her for her
initiative and leadership in forming the Hawaii Patient Enrichment,
Inc.
